Open Book

The International Book Fair in Krakow is now 20 years old – this year’s anniversary is going to be fantastic!

The Cracovian celebration of books breaks new records every year. In 2015, there were as many as 700 exhibitors and 68,000 visitors. This year’s festival brings tried and tested features such as the five specialist salons: scientific and academic publishers, religious publishers, new media, children’s and young adult literature, and comic books. There will also be anniversary attractions, including a special task to prepare a subjective list of 200 most important publications of the last two decades in Poland and twenty short recommendations (one per selected book from each year). To whet the visitors’ appetites, the prize – the full set of 200 books – will be presented during the fair at the EXPO Kraków lobby. On the opening day we will see the launch of an anniversary publication co-created by twenty authors representing a variety of styles.

Writers attending the fair include Alain Mabanckou, Romain Puértolas, Raymond Khoury, Andrzej Stasiuk, Małgorzata Kalicińska, Tomasz Różycki, Ewa Stadtmüller, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Mariusz Szczygieł. And of course there will be the Promised Land: the anniversary guest is Israel, presenting the country’s literary force (as part of the Israel in Kraków programme). There will be meetings with authors including Zeruya Shalev and Eshkol Nevo, while the phrase of another Israeli writer (do you know which one?) was the inspiration for this year’s motto: “To read, you must first open yourself”.
