The Barbican and the Defensive Wall

Planty

The jewel in the crown of Kraków’s fortifications is accessible to tourists from spring to autumn, and in summer it provides a backdrop for events that immerse you in medieval history and customs.

The jewel in the crown of Kraków’s fortifications, the Gothic Barbican – familiarly referred to as Rondel (“the saucepan”) – can be visited from April to October. Knights’ tournaments and chivalric revelries are organised here in summer, introducing spectators to medieval history and customs, as well as concerts. Together with the adjacent fragment of the defensive wall with St Florian’s Gate, the Barbican belonged to the fortifications of the city, the vast majority of which was torn down early in the 19th century. They were replaced with the Planty Garden Ring: the park encircling the city. The entire complex, together with the neo-Gothic chapel on the first floor of the tower can be visited with a single ticket.
