It was the symbol of luxury during Poland’s communist-era in the 1970s and 1980s: the Italian-style Fiat 125p! Ever since the first angular cars rolled off production lines in 1967, they were coveted by everyone, although for a long time they were only available to the most privileged individuals: members of the uniformed services and public enterprises, communist party members and model workers. Gradually, the cult car became simply a larger version of the popular Fiat 126p. How much was the 125p model? How could it be obtained? Who drove it? How was it used in the party’s propaganda? What were holidays on four wheels like? And why was it such a huge challenge to maintain a car during the communist era? We’ll learn answers to those and other questions at the exhibition P for Paradox. A Tale of Fiat 125p at the Museum of Municipal Engineering, opening to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the start of production of the “large Fiat” in Poland. Original vehicles, interactive displays and an extensive accompanying programme provide an excellent introduction to the automotive industry in communist Poland and its highs and lows.
