Sonorous Offering

They say good things come in small packages. By that right, the shortest night of the year deserves to be celebrated – and how best to celebrate if not with music!

Our ancestors have been celebrating the summer solstice for millennia. Whether focusing on ancient, pagan rites or more recent Christian rituals, the main goal has always been fun. And things are no different today: the French tradition of Fête de la Musique allows artists to express themselves in urban space almost without limitations, and the public has the perfect opportunity to experience myriad music styles. In Kraków, the custom intertwines local traditions as the Wianki – Fête de la Musique. On 22 June, the city’s streets, squares and hidden corners are filled with sound once again!

The loudest venue will be the Main Market Square, with the Hard Rock Cafe Stage presenting a dazzling blend of genres. Electronic dance music comes from the duo of producers Flirtini with support from young vocalists, including Rosalie., Piotr Zioła, Michał Sobierajski, Ras, Lena and Gverilla. Natalia Nykiel and The Dumplings provide a skilful blend of electronica and pop, with rapper Miuosh and the ensemble Rasmentalism supplying a taste of hip-hop. The programme also includes the Silent Disco co-organised by the Unsound festival.

The Coca-Cola Stage on Powiśle welcomes Mela Koteluk, Barbara Wrońska, Misia Furtak, tęskno (duo of vocalist Joanna Longić and pianist Hania Rani), and the Waglewski brothers collective aka Fisz Emade Tworzywo.

The Kraków Stage in front of the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre showcases local artists. We will hear the captivating Renata Przemyk, the up-and-coming Patrick the Pan and Limboski, and the trumpeter and composer Przemysław Sokół with his orchestra specialising in Balkan rhythms.

But major outdoor stages are just the start. The campaign “Youth in the City” encourages students at Kraków’s music schools to join in with the celebrations. They bring elegant sounds of classical music to Gazebo in the Planty Garden Ring. The Off Radio Kraków Stage by the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre presents artists best known from the wireless. Discussion panels held during breaks between concerts explore improving accessibility to music to people with disabilities. The Alternative Stage at the Nowy Square, under the patronage of Alchemia, welcomes experimental musicians Resina, Enablers, BNNT and Song Laboratory. In the evening, the Debut Stage at Hevre presents young, up-and-coming artists from Poland and Ukraine. Earlier on in the day, we can take a peek at the mechanics of the music industry with workshops and discussions with musicians, journalists and representatives of musical circles.

And that’s not all! Acoustic concerts visit squares and parks throughout the city. A dance at the tent at the intersection of Józefa and Wąska streets marks the start of the Jewish Culture Festival. The Czerwieński Boulevard hosts garland-making workshops culminating with a competition for the most beautiful wreath. As usual, the Wianki closes with pyrotechnic displays on the banks of the Vistula. After dark, we move to Kraków’s numerous clubs, including Forum Przestrzenie, Hevre, Pasaż, Prozak 2.0, Strefa and Szpitalna 1. Don’t waste a single moment! (Bartosz Suchecki, “Karnet”)
