Out of Africa

If you thought Africa is a cinematic desert, you couldn’t be more wrong! The continent’s cinematography abounds with fascinating productions. We will find out for ourselves during the 14th AfriCamera Festival, held at Pod Baranami Cinema between 21 and 27 February.

You Will Die at 20 (dir. Amjad Abu Alala) is a unique film representing Sudan – a country where cinematography was heavily suppressed for many years and which is now ravaged by a humanitarian crisis. The film tells the moving story about a young man whose family and neighbours believe in a dark prophesy about him. The Unknown Saint (dir. Alaa Eddine Aljem) is a Moroccan crime caper set in a remote desert village. The Polish documentary They Don’t Know Our Art. Graffiti in Kenya (dir. Paulina Zając) is set in Kibera slums in Nairobi. The Tunisian drama Look At Me (dir. Néjib Belkadhi) is a moving family drama exploring the difficult relationship between an autistic boy man and his father who abandoned him years previously.

We will also see the South African Knuckle City (dir. Jahmil X.T. Qubeka) telling a fascinating story about the world of boxing ruled by money and brutality, and The Burial of Kojo (dir. Blitz Bazawule) from Ghana – an oneiric drama telling a family story from a young girl’s perspective. There will be plenty to choose from!
