Kraków’s tenement houses have a long, rich history. As you wander around Kraków, look up from time to time to admire the beautifully decorated façades. But what do the emblems on the buildings mean?
Well, once upon a time the buildings didn’t have numbers and, instead, they were named after decorations adorning them – horses, fish, bells – or simply after the owners. This continued until the end of the 18th century, when Kraków found itself under Austrian rule. Austrians introduced their own order, including house numbers. Today we’re keeping an eye out for animal motifs.
