Traditional – with potato and cheese, cabbage and mushrooms or strawberries – or something more exotic? Last year’s winners were the latter: stuffed with smoked prunes, walnuts and honey (jury award) and free-range duck, fresh figs and lemon basil (public award). During the Pierogi Festival, we’ll discover this year’s contenders for the statuettes of St Jacek with Pierogi and King Casimir the Great. As well as feasts and culinary competitions, the Small Market Square also hosts a programme of artistic and musical events. On 11 August, Joanna Słowińska performs with her group, and on 14 August we will see the Krzikopa ensemble from Silesia. There will be plenty to nourish the spirit as well as the body – we’re sure St Jacek Odrowąż, informal patron of pierogi and their fans, and the larger-than-life King Casimir would approve!
