The 15th Kraków Summer Animation Days reveal that animation doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, and instead it presents them in an accessible, almost tangible way.

This year’s event abounds with themes of women’s emancipation, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. On three festival evenings, we will see short films from France, Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia and Estonia, awarded prizes and distinctions at animation festivals. We will see recent feature-length animations including Signe Baumane’s My Love Affair With Marriage exploring themes of female mutiny, Alain Ughetto’s No Dogs Or Italians Allowed telling the story of Italian migration by intertwining poesy and realism, and Nuno Beato’s moving family tale My Grandfather’s Demons. As usual, the festival includes animation workshops for children and young people.

Another, after ”Rocks in My Pocket”, feature animation by an outstanding author Signe Baumane, who fights the stereotypes of image and place of women in society. From an early age, songs and fairytales convinced Zelma that Love would solve all her problems as long as she abided by societal expectations of how a girl should act. But as she grew older something didn’t seem right with the concept of love: the more she tried to conform, the more her body resisted. A story about the acceptance of the inner female rebellion.

In the Beginning of the 20th century – Ughettera, Northern Italy, the Ughetto family’s village. Living in the region had become very difficult and the Ughettos dream of a better life abroad. Legend has it that Luigi Ughetto crossed the Alps starting a new life in France, thus changing the destiny of his beloved family forever. His grandson travels back in time revisiting their history.
